2012: Opening of the Hallandsas Tunnel, Sweden

The Hallandsas Ridge Tunnel has been under construction in southwest Sweden since the early 1990s. Construction stopped in 1997 in response to environmental problems and other harmful unintended consequences of the project. However, after much reassessment, the tunnel's construction has resumed and builders estimate that the project will be completed in 2012. Ultimately, the tunnel will connect Norway, Sweden, and Germany. It is noted as one of the world's most complicated tunneling projects.
