2012: Marmaray Project begins commercial operation in Istanbul
In 2012 the Marmaray Project, an undersea railway across the Istanbul Strait, will open for commercial operation. A railway under the Strait has been a dream of engineers since the 1860s, but construction began in earnest in 2004. Upon completion it will serve as a vital connection between Europe and Turkey, making cross-Strait travel and trade easier than ever before.
