2012: U.S. cedes command of South Korean military
In 2007, the U.S. and South Korea agreed that the U.S. would cede control of the South Korean military in 2012, thus ending a 50-year pact
that gave the U.S. control of South Korea's army during wartime. The agreement dates back to the end of the Korean war. The Korean government has had peacetime
command of its armed forces since 1994.
