2011: U.S. deadline for completing the 2005 Base Realignments and Closures
By September 15, 2011, the 2005 Base Realignments and Closures (BRAC) must be completed. According to the Department of Defense, BRAC is "the congressionally authorized process DoD has previously used to reorganize its base structure to more efficiently and effectively support [U.S.] forces, increase operational readiness and facilitate new ways of doing business." The 2005 BRAC recommendations are considered to be the most aggressive ever proposed. BRAC 2005 focuses on domestic base structures and will affect over 800 installations. The four previous rounds of BRAC - 1988, 1991, 1993, and 1995 - saved tax payers $18 billion through 2001 and $7 billion every year since then. For more information, click here.
