2011: Opening of the Freedom Tower, 10th Anniversary of September 11th
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th, the Freedom Tower is scheduled to open on the site of the former World Trade Center on September 11th, 2011. At 1,776 feet tall, the tower will become America's tallest building. The 2.6-million-square-foot building, designed by David M. Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will house restaurants, office space, and observation decks. The outlines of the old towers will be preserved in fountains and memorials, and there will be a visitor's center on site.
