2010: U.S. & Pan Russian Censuses - The first Baby Boomers turn 65
A national census is used to provide a headcount and gather information about a resident population within a territory.
The United States census occurs every 10 years. The last census was conducted in 2000 and the next one will be in 2010.
The first post-Soviet Russian census was conducted in 2002 and the next census will be in 2010.
In 2010 the first members of the "Baby Boom" generation will turn 65. This date merits attention because it ushers in an era of demographic changes. As baby boomers begin to retire, the effects will be felt in the stock market and in fiscal policy debates. In 2010 there will be 246 elderly people for every 1,000 members of the work force, and by 2030 the ratio will be 411 elders for every 1,000 workers. This will put a significant strain on current pension policies, especially Social Security.
