2010: Completion of the Israeli West Bank barrier

2010 will see the completion of the Israeli West Bank Barrier , seven years after its original scheduled completion date. The barrier is an extremely controversial endeavor. Supporters of its construction argue that it is necessary to ensure the security of Israeli civilians against Palestinian terrorism and in particular the risk of suicide bombers. Opponents, including the International Court of Justice, contend that the barrier has been erected in violation of international law, and express concerns for its humanitarian consequences.

95 percent of the barrier consists of multiple layers of fence systems, including intrusion detection equipment, barbed wire, and checkpoints. The barrier has impeded the ability of Palestinians to travel freely within the West Bank and sometimes to access their own land as well as work sites in Israel, hindering the local economy.
