2010: Annual G8 development aid to Africa to reach $25 billion
At the 2005 G8 Summit in Gleneagles, the member countries of the G8 and other donors committed to increasing official development assistance to Africa to $25 billion a year by 2010. This will be more than twice the amount of aid offered to the continent in 2004. The countries involved in the negotiations determined that such a substantial increase in aid was necessary in order to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the Millennium Declaration by 2015.
Unfortunately, development groups have expressed concern that the G8 member countries will fall short of this promise, pointing to the lack of a concrete plan for poverty alleviation in recipient nations.
