2009: Presidential elections in Chile, Afghanistan, Iran

Chile is scheduled to hold presidential elections on Friday, December 11. The elected successor to Michelle Bachelet will take office in March of 2010.

Afghanistan will have both presidential and parliamentary elections in 2009. The presidential elections will serve to determine who will be the successor to current head of state Hamid Karzai for the following five years.

Iran's 10th presidential elections will take place in mid-2009, leading many to wonder whether current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will seek re-election.
