2009: Occupancy Scheduled for the Burj Dubai skyscraper, UAE
Completion of the construction of the Burj Dubai - or "Dubai Tower" - in the United Arab Emirates is scheduled for June
2009, with occupancy scheduled for September of that same year. The skyscraper will then become the tallest building in the world, with a height between 800 and 950 meters and containing
between 160 and 189 floors. Construction began in 2005. The project, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is expected to have cost $800 billion, and will contain residences, hotels, parkland, a mall,
and even a man-made lake. The Burj Dubai is perhaps the best single display of the UAE government's efforts to diversify its economy,
appeal to tourism and gather international prestige.
