2009: 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web

1989 marked the year in which the Internet began to integrate support of various types of protocols into its networking fabric and the number of hosts broke 100,000. 1991 saw the general release of the World Wide Web to CERN machines.

As of 2007, more than a billion people across the globe are identified as Internet users. 18.9 percent of the world population has access to the World Wide Web, with usage growing by 244.7 percent in the period between 2000 and 2007.
