2009: Canada's military commitment in Afghanistan expires
Canada is the fourth largest source of troops for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
in Afghanistan after the U.S., the U.K., and Germany. Canada's decision to participate in the mission generated domestic controversy from the outset of the invasion.
In 2006, Canadian legislators voted to extend the country's combat mission in Afghanistan until February of 2009. When the time comes, the end of the deployment will have significant consequences for other NATO member countries
and partners pursuing the ISAF mission.
