2008: UN Review of the Kyoto Protocol - Worldwide CO2 emissions reach 5 tons per person per year
The second review of the Kyoto Protocol will take place at its fourth session in 2008, at the behest of the
U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in light of its recent findings. The 168 signatory countries to the treaty
will attempt to decide on a strategy to curb carbon emissions from 2013 to 2017, given that the Protocol
is currently set to expire in 2012. The review will allow the parties involved to establish what changes need to be
made to the treaty for its next commitment period.
Indeed, experts estimate that worldwide CO2 emissions will reach 5 tons per person each year. The average for OECD countries
nonetheless remains much higher than for non-OECD ones.
